District Grant Project Final Report – Working With Youth

D9650 Rotary Foundation – District Grant Project Final Report

 Project Description

  1. Describe the project. What was done, when, and where did project activities take place? If this is a progress report, what remains to be done?
The program – Working with Youth: To seek out and give an opportunity for students, from low socio-economic backgrounds, to attend two different youth programs offered within the district, including the National Youth Science Forum, and RYLA that would otherwise be unavailable to them because of cost.
The Club supported two NYSF students in January 2021 to attend NYSF online and face to face activities n the January 2021 program. One student from Tamworth was fully funded in the amount of $1900 between the E-Club and the Rotary Club of Tamworth and the other student from Tasmania was funded by the club in the sum of $500. Both students attended and reported back with the success of the program for their future Science studies. The Club also supported two students to attend RYLA in May 2021, funding one of those students fully with the second student funded by their employer. Both students reported back with the success of the program and the way in which it has changed their lives.

To identify a student from Trangie with needs for special provisions in his Higher School Certificate schooling, because of vision impairment to be provided with a specially modified computer to be used in his Senior School Studies. This was successfully completed in December 2020 with the student from Trangie obtaining a suitable computer for his Year 12 studies in 2021, purchased by the school with funds provided by the EClub; his report back to the Club indicated that the use of the computer will give him the opportunity to make the very best effort at his Higher School Certificate at the end of 2021.

Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

NYSF – Ryan Southern. Tamworth High School. Plans to be a radiographer. The use of these funds has consolidated his desire to follow this profession. He now has a network of other students throughout Australia to ensure that this happens. He will be returning to NYSF in January 2022 as a student leader and has been elected School Captain of Tamworth High School. Need met – pathway to chosen career consolidated. Leadership skills enhanced.

NYSF – Marli Saaiman  Longford Rotary Cub, Tasmania. Marli comes from a refugee family from Zimbabwe. She is a very bright Science student and Longford sent out a request to other Clubs to hep support Marli to attend NYSF 2021. The Club provided $500 towards her support as did Tamworth Rotary Cub. This contribution ensured that she was able to attend NYSF 2021 and reported back outstanding success with the activities provided. Need met – support of a refugee student who would otherwise have been denied access to this outstanding Science program.

RYLA 2021 – Luke Aquilina – unemployed from Sydney. Attended RYLA and made a significant contribution to the program. Now actively seeking work in IT. Gained considerable leadership and communication skills.

RYLA 2021 – Gabriella Barwick – working for Stroud Homes. Gained considerable communication skills and leadership qualities. Returning to RYLA 2022 as a student leader. Has been given new responsibilities in the company. Leadership training and personal confidence building.

Trangie – Cameron Cook Year 12 student with sight disabilities. Computer with suitable software and keyboard to meet his visual impairment to enable him to complete his Year 12 studies. Already having a significant impact. Support of a student with disability.
